Summary

Aru Shah and her sisters--including one who also claims to be the Sleeper's daughter--must find their mentors Hanuman and Urvashi in Lanka, the city of gold, before war breaks out between the devas and asuras。

Aru has just made a wish on the tree of wishes, but she can't remember what it was。 She's pretty sure she didn't wish for a new sister, one who looks strangely familiar and claims to be the Sleeper's daughter, like her。

Aru also isn't sure she still wants to fight on behalf of the devas in the war against the Sleeper and his demon army。 The gods have been too devious up to now。 Case in point: Kubera, ruler of the city of gold, promises to give the Pandavas two powerful weapons, but only if they win his trials。 If they lose, they won't stand a chance against the Sleeper's troops, which will soon march on Lanka to take over the Otherworld。

Aru's biggest question, though, is why every adult she has loved and trusted so far has failed her。 Will she come to peace with what they've done before she has to wage the battle of her life?

His reasoning on not taking anyone's side is understandable given his situation but as the girls point out it's also ridiculous at times。 I am not worried about the prophecy。 Aru is already the death of him and it seems he figured it out before the battle。The Twins were a delight each time they appeared and to finally get to all the Potatoes in action together will be a delight。When Gogo, Dee Dee and Vajra were destroyed it hurt so much。 I am so mad at Kara for that。Aru is right to feel sorry for Sleeper, Krithika, Kara, Boo and to pity them。 It's the plain truth。Speaking of Boo his new form is of Phoenix and I hope he won't make the same mistakes again。Kara being Karna is no surprise。 Also her taking the Antima Astra was not shocking but I had thought it would happen in next book but it fit with the storyline well。 Also, Karna was spurned by Draupadi (though Aiden let Kara down gently and politely) it ignited such wrath in him that at the Dice Game he was the one who suggested that she be stripped publicly (Don't believe the recent influxes which say it was done by Kauravas。 It was all Karna's idea)。 So, her sorrow at being rejected by Aiden is understandable but I hope that didn't factor in her betrayal。 She had eight months with her newfound family and yes she was shocked and hurt but she did see what kind of crimes had Sleeper committed yet she went with him。 She should have thought of her family at least。 Blood ties are not always everything。 。。。more

Aru is such a fun character to watch develop, as she's not perfect but she's clearly trying。 There are scenes when her anger gets the better of her, but her friends help her or she learns a lesson, and there are scenes where their flaws get the better of them and Aru hops right in to help。 In this book, especially, she struggles more with the reality of her absent father, when compared to how he has been treating her sister, and while he is center stage the villain that she has to fight but has Aru is such a fun character to watch develop, as she's not perfect but she's clearly trying。 There are scenes when her anger gets the better of her, but her friends help her or she learns a lesson, and there are scenes where their flaws get the better of them and Aru hops right in to help。 In this book, especially, she struggles more with the reality of her absent father, when compared to how he has been treating her sister, and while he is center stage the villain that she has to fight but has complicated feelings about。 Her Mom is also absent for most of this book, and while that frustrates Aru, I think we also see how much she has grown in her behavior without her mother there to help tell her what to do。 And I LOVED the budding romance, and I hope we see more of it in future books, which I can't wait to read。 。。。more

One of my favorite genres has always been mythologies, and with this one, Roshani Chokshi has done it again! She picks up right where Aru Shah and the Tree of Wishes left off, and leaves us waiting for the 5th installment that, I'm sure, is soon to come。 It was a thrill to read this latest installment in the Pandava series。 One of my favorite genres has always been mythologies, and with this one, Roshani Chokshi has done it again! honestly I'm still in a fugue state from reading this book。 Why do all these good books need to end on cliffhangersssssome thoughts, randomly collected:- in the book Aru, Mini, Brynne, Aiden, and Kara for the most part have to go through all these ~trials~ (technically only three but with all the twists and turns it feels like more haha) and I just loved how those were all shown, they weren't just "fight this guy" challenges but challenges which sought to overturn preheld beliefs and barriers be honestly I'm still in a fugue state from reading this book。 Why do all these good books need to end on cliffhangersssssome thoughts, randomly collected:- in the book Aru, Mini, Brynne, Aiden, and Kara for the most part have to go through all these ~trials~ (technically only three but with all the twists and turns it feels like more haha) and I just loved how those were all shown, they weren't just "fight this guy" challenges but challenges which sought to overturn preheld beliefs and barriers between the group- the character development。。。 ugh so good。 The trials def helped in this regard because you can just see the characters grow, even if at first they rebel (especially Brynne and Aiden) it just makes it more satisfying to see them finally surpass themselves, become their best selves, accept what they're afraid of, etc etc etc- I didn't realize how much I missed Rudy until he came back late in the book。 While he didn't have much of a major plotline, his banter fit in so well with the gang and I adored his humor (c h i c k) and honestly he's just an integral part of the Potatoes at this point。 Hoping for some more focus on him in Nectar of Immortality!- and on that note。。。 Nikita and Sheela! They're excellent as always and Nikita in particular has some killer lines。 Their parents have returned over the two-month gap between books, and I do wish this was explored a little more, so I hope we get to see some of that in Nectar of Immortality, as well as more Sheela and general- I was expecting more of Ravana, you know half-sibling parallels etc。 Instead of focusing on one person in particular it seems like City of Gold showed a wide array of gods and beings- I appreciate the development Aiden in particular got。 This book definitely showed a lot more of his internal conflict, flaws, etc。。。 he's very indecisive, doesn't like picking sides, and tends to get stuck in his own head。 This can make him really frustrating sometimes, but it's also nice to see some ~character development~ I mean it wouldn't be development if there was nothing to develop in the first place haha- this definitely felt。。。 not like a filler book, but definitely a setup book。 End of Time - introduction to this world, Song of Death - exploring the world a little more, Tree of Wishes - discovering some game-changing revelations, and City of Gold, I think, is when the characters finally set things in motion once and for all, they finally begin to decide where they stand and who they are。 And in Nectar of Immortality, I can't wait for it to all come together!- Brynne x Hira may or may not be a thing and I am Interested- and of course speaking of romance, I would be remiss not to mention Aru x Aiden。 I honestly love their development in this book because it really highlighted not just their goofy good times and banter but also how they act when under pressure, how their personalities clash and get along。。。 it definitely adds a bit of a new intensity, you know? And while Aiden might act not-so-cool sometimes, I do get where he's coming from。 (view spoiler)[I wonder (and fear) where the 'the person you love will kill you' prophecy will come into play in Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality what with Aru x Aiden basically being confirmed, kiss and all。 (Also, I love the Sleeper acting like an overprotective dad, even as I'm like 'seriously? You abandoned Aru and tried to murder her friends AND basically abducted Kara and brainwashed her to be your perfect daughter。。。 really going to act like a good dad huh。') (hide spoiler)]- there were also hints of Mini x Rudy, but less so- BRYNNE BRYNNE BRYNNE BRYNNE BRYNNE- (view spoiler)[Brynne PoV is actually perfect and I love it so much。 She is WONDERFUL。 Also, it actually made me think back to the Mini-Yamuna scene in Tree of Wishes, which makes me wonder if Nikita or Sheela are going to have a saving-the-day moment in Nectar of Immortality。 (hide spoiler)]- Kara。。。 Kara, Kara, Kara。 She was such a。。。 weirdly nice character haha。 Also, a fellow literary nerd! I really, REALLY can't wait to see her story in Nectar of Immortality, I'd also like to see the other facets of her personality (view spoiler)[for example her crush on Aiden, I can definitely see it but I'm interested in how his rejection affects her, like will she be vengeful? Or bitter? I'm just really excited to see her TESTED TO HER VERY CORE。 And maybe also turn good idk (hide spoiler)] and it's almost, I feel like her character was more shown in how it affected the group dynamics + individual character, which was definitely super fun to see, but I'm excited to see her with more。。。 agency, I guess? She's such an interesting character I just really want to see where her story goes- this book ended with a bang and I for one am SUPER excited to read the next book (view spoiler)[but legitimately how are they going to be able to hold their own when they don't even have their celestial weapons anymore lol (hide spoiler)]- Boo。 Just, Boo。 He can make my heart hurt in so many different ways in just one page- City of Gold was a wild ride of emotions definitely。 I love seeing how all these characters have grown from day one, not necessarily in a good or bad way but just。。。 more into their own。 They're like little siblings to me or something lol, even though they're like, fourteen-fifteen。。。 I've been rooting for them since day one(view spoiler)[also why does Aru keep having awful and/or weird birthdays lol (hide spoiler)]BRYNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE 。。。more

If I had to choose which book in this series had to be more heart-wrenching and gut-punching for me, it's this one, 100%。 Roshani Chokshi continues to spin beautifully-woven tales of Hindu mythology into the modern setting of Aru Shah's world, but we're also introduced to new allies and new foes, all with their own complex backgrounds and multidimensional personalities。Book four in Aru Shah's series starts off directly after the end of Aru Shah and the Tree of Wishes, where she meets Kara, the S If I had to choose which book in this series had to be more heart-wrenching and gut-punching for me, it's this one, 100%。 Roshani Chokshi continues to spin beautifully-woven tales of Hindu mythology into the modern setting of Aru Shah's world, but we're also introduced to new allies and new foes, all with their own complex backgrounds and multidimensional personalities。Book four in Aru Shah's series starts off directly after the end of Aru Shah and the Tree of Wishes, where she meets Kara, the Sleeper's other daughter, and Aru finds herself in conflict with not just the Sleeper and his own army, but also herself as she struggles with guilt at her own actions and mistrust after a heavy-hitting betrayal from the previous book。I absolutely enjoyed this book even more than the previous one。 The dialogue between the Pandavas and Aiden along with Kara, the newbie in this bunch, are delightful and entertaining, per usual, and Chokshi also does an amazing job with the will-they-won't-they interaction between Aru and Aiden。 (Personally, the cuteness of Aru's crush makes me want to just die! HEART EYES AT THE TWO OF THEM!) The book was just all around a perfect blend of funny, entertaining, and sucker punch to the gut from all the emotional turmoils that must come from a teenager who has so much self-doubt。Beautiful 5 out of 5 stars for me!Thank you to NetGalley for access to this book in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

I really enjoyed this new section of Aru's story。 Her longing to belong and connect with her Pandava sisters is definitely one that I feel would resonate with a lot of the target age range。 As always, Aru and Co。 are scrambling to overcome obstacles to save the day, quipping and sassing everyone around them along the way。 The story concludes with a cliffhanger (not quite as dramatic as the last one!) that sets up the final installment of the Pandava quintet quite nicely。 I really enjoyed this new section of Aru's story。 Her longing to belong and connect with her Pandava sisters is definitely one that I feel would resonate with a lot of the target age range。 As always, Aru and Co。 are scrambling to overcome obstacles to save the day, quipping and sassing everyone around them along the way。 The story concludes with a cliffhanger (not quite as dramatic as the last one!) that sets up the final installment of the Pandava quintet quite nicely。 。。。more

I have been following the Aru Shah series since the first book came out and I am literally counting down the days till it is released。 As an Indian in the United States, I could not relate to my favorite characters in that way。 That changed with the Aru Shah series。 I absolutely loved everything about each book in this series。 I would recommend this series to everyone who loves adventure, fantasy, and humor。 Aru Shah and the City of Gold I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK TO COME OUT!!! I didn't expect to enjoy this series so much。 Can't wait for this book to come out! Ravana is on the front cover and it seems like it will take place in Lanka, so I am sure this book is going to take some wild turns。 With the way Chokshi wrote Surpanakha's story, it will be nice to see how she redeems Ravana as well。A lot of people want to see Karna in this book, and guess what? I think Karna is already in the story。。。 as Kara! It kind of makes sense, as a missing sister and that sort of thing, I didn't expect to enjoy this series so much。 Can't wait for this book to come out! It kind of makes sense, as a missing sister and that sort of thing, and I fail to see Kara's purpose elsewhere。 Of course, I could be completely wrong, but that's my guess。For that matter, forget Karna。 I want a Duryodhana in the story and not a redeemed one。 Reformed Shakuni Mama was a total let down, I want that evil, insecure, power-hungry, and misunderstood Duryodhana。 I've always felt a little bad for Duryodhana, he was under a bad influence, and always felt over-shadowed by the Pandavas。 Still, that's no excuse for what he did。 Wait。。。。 what if the Sleeper was Duryodhana? I think he is, after all, his name is Suyodhana and he had some evil prophecy about him too! Why did I not realize this before? It's a little weird with the ages and stuff, but I think that's right!Hopefully, there will be a Khumbhakarna in this book too! That would be really funny, him being one of the few people that can eat more than Brynne。 Honestly, I can't wait! 。。。more

I can't tell you how excited I am for this。 We get to see all the Pandava sisters again and meet Kara, who claims to be the Sleeper's daughter。 I am hoping for some awesome, sweet and shippy Shahcharya (Aru x Aiden) moments。 I want to see Aru and the main protagonists grow and mature even more。 I want to see Aiden's and Aru's face when they realize that the Pandava Draupadi loved (romantically) more than the others was Arjuna。 I am excited to see Ravana come to life (as shown in the cover)。 I'm I can't tell you how excited I am for this。 We get to see all the Pandava sisters again and meet Kara, who claims to be the Sleeper's daughter。 I am hoping for some awesome, sweet and shippy Shahcharya (Aru x Aiden) moments。 I want to see Aru and the main protagonists grow and mature even more。 I want to see Aiden's and Aru's face when they realize that the Pandava Draupadi loved (romantically) more than the others was Arjuna。 I am excited to see Ravana come to life (as shown in the cover)。 I'm excited to see which side Aru picks。 If you can't tell, I am excited for every single aspect of this book。 。。。more
